Heh. I'd forgotten this one.

YOU NEVER CAN TELL

(tune original, or use most of Boiled in Lead's version of
The Lusty Young Smith, or whatever fits.)

Lord Angus went down to Crown Tourney
A distance of many a mile
The tales he brought back from his journey
Will keep us amused for a while

Chorus:
For you never can tell at a tourney
You will see things you haven't before
It may seem a bit wild
But it's all pretty mild
You should see what goes on at the War!

He was trying both courtly and suave to appear
To a certain young lady he wished to impress
When what to his wondering eyes should draw near
But the Baron of Nordskogen --- clad in a dress!

Chorus

Oh, the Baron looked really quite fetching
In fact, he could cause quite a stir
But the lady in question was kvetching
That the dress fit him better that her...

Chorus

Twas the corset that made him the belle of the ball
An image that he will not easily escape
Indeed I'm surprised that he got out at all
For we fastened him in with a whole roll of tape!

Chorus

So if period style is your passion
And if being authentic's your quest
Make sure you take note of the fashion
In which Barons are rightly addressed!

Chorus and finis.

Yeah, it all happened. I wasn't actually there, myself, but the stories from eyewitnesses were so good that I had to wrap some words around them and make it a song.

Oh, my goodness... talk about a small world!! Many, many years ago, in the days when we were first dating, my spouse was esquired to the knight whose lady sewed Lord Angus's dresses, and he knew Lord Angus well! Wow.... Never would have imagined that we'd have that in common.

Oh, it's Devorgil (sorry, forgot that), and when you next come to Madison, we'd love to compare notes to see where else our lives intersect. Haven't found anyone who knows anything about 1970s-era SCA in forever!

Lord Angus taught me to fight. Well, Lord Angus taught me to swing a stick, anyhow; I didn't go further than that, but it was most educational. He was conducting an introductory session for women who didn't necessarily want to learn how to fight but who wanted to know a little bit more about it. The first session was mostly about getting over our reluctance to land a solid hit.

Didn't take too long for him to coach me into that, holding some thingie for me to hit. A few swings in, he grinned at me and said, "Right. OK, from now on you don't get to hit me unless I have full armor on." (Definitely wise of him, because aim takes a while to develop.)
