answering questions on a whim

thefridayfive   has questions today and I am answering on a whim.

1. What are three things you refuse to live without?  1. reading, 2. my good tools that get the jobs at the workbench done well and do not hurt me to use, and 3. music.
 

2. What are your three favorite items of clothing? Umm. That's weirdly difficult to answer. I could give three that are mostly types of clothing, like the PopFit leggings (pockets upon pockets and very comfortable), any or all of my Tilly nap rags (Tilly on eBay made nighgowns out of vintage sheets that were wonderful and did not hurt), and 3. that huge floaty shimmering green-grey-blue dress with the ruched flowers and the pockets, It's easier to name favorite accessories, and even then I'm back to types mostly: 1. my belts with the belt pouches on them, 2. any of the harnesses from Apatico, and 3. the two linen aprons that are tabard-style with ties at both sides and good pockets.

 

3. What are your three favorite books? Absolutely cannot answer that one. My brain sits down and looks overwhelmed when I try. Oh, wait, I do have one. Does it count if it's five books in one? It's Annals of the Former World, by John McPhee.

 

4. What are three things you'd grab if you had to evacuate your house quickly? 1. my phone, 2. the go bags, 3. my meds. (I'm thankful that these days I only take really boring meds -- not a hand-carried prescription in the lot now! -- but it would still be difficult to deal with replacing them before there would be bad things happening.) I would also take but am not counting my mask(s) and my cane, because I sure wouldn't get far without them.

 

5. What are your three favorite songs or musical works?  Today? 1. Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, 2. Keith Jarrett's Köln Concert, and 3. Now the Day Is Over, lyrics by Sabine Baring-Gould, but it may be a completely different set if you ask tomorrow.

When people ask me in interviews what are my x favorite abc, I mentally translate it to "name x things you like in the category abc," because then I can move forward on it in ways that "FAVORITE" blocks.

Ooh. I am going to borrow that one. Because yeah, that's a thing.

The desk drawer that holds my prescriptions is labeled "Come With Me If You Want To Live" and has a great big plastic carrier bag so I can stuff in as many as I can carry. Priority to the pre-packed weekly boxes, since I pack them about once every three months if I can get away with it.

The 3 things to grab if you have to evacuate is actually a real and present thing as I live in an area where wildland fires aren’t uncommon. In fact, the house I am in was evacuated 12 years ago. The fire stopped ~.5 miles or 24 houses from this. My friends who lived here then were given 45 minutes to get out

So, I’d grab my phone, my computer, and the file box that holds my ID, including passport. That’s the three.

Then I’d grab the cat and stuff him into his carrier and grab his food. After that, if there was time, I’d fill my travel backpack with some clothes. I don’t have prescription medications, so that’s not a thing.

But it is something we have in the back of our minds all the time.
