Welcome aboard the Good Ship Birthday Party! It's been a while since there's been a proper birthday cruise, and I'm turning 60 today (Saturday, August 22), so it's time for fun again. Also it's the best way to do a birthday party right now, seeing as how a virtual ship has got the whole social distancing thing covered.
Come on and join the fun! Feel free to bring imaginary comestibles to add to the potluck, yah? Wear whatever flamboyant or quiet garb you like. If you prefer to hide out happily in the library, you're in luck, as this ship is equipped with an excellent one -- and please do take an imaginary book home with you, as a reminder of the day.
Welcome! Thank you for coming to help me celebrate!
Oh, hey, somebody asked about virtual gifts. If you have a recommendation for something you like a lot, please do leave me a recommendation. This is a great chance for me to find new things to read or listen to or watch. Thanks!

Huzzah! And Happy Birthday!
Date: 2020-08-22 06:43 am (UTC)Oooh book recommendation: the book that still gave me the most joy the past year was Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. It takes all the slash fanfic tropes and mixes them up with US political satire/political wish fulfillment and it's just glorious and fun and was a balm on my heart.

The ones I keep coming back to are "Shadow" and "Joy" and "Rain", but they've all got something fascinating in them.

Date: 2020-08-22 06:52 pm (UTC)My covered dish(?) offering is a cool-to-room-temperature salad of brown basmati rice, sharp arugula, gloriously in-season tomatoes, Persian cucumber, and tangy Bulgarian feta cheese, lightly dressed with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and minced garlic. (Salt to taste--feta cheeses vary.)
If you happen to be in the mood for extended comfort AU reading and/or listening, I can recommend this series in the Star Wars fandom, which has spawned a whole collection of related works, here.
I can also recommend this series in the Witcher fandom, which has excellent podfic versions here.
For shinies, do you already know about tiaramania on tumblr? How about moomindeco? The latter is not just shinies—there's lots of architecture, too, but some marvelous Art Nouveau pretties keep me coming back to look. Note that the photos seem to be sized for smartphone screen viewing, rather than desk/laptops.
Hope you'll enjoy something there!

Date: 2020-08-22 07:28 pm (UTC)R and I recently watched a show called "Todxs Nosotrxs (He, She, and They)". It's about a non-binary teenager who runs away to their gay cousin (who will obviously Understand Everything) in Sao Paolo. The streaming service says it's in Spanish, but it is not; it's, obviously, in Portuguese. The captioning is pretty good. From time to time the characters use an English phrase, which pops out of the surrounding to us unintelligible Portuguese. We learned a very few words, but mostly people talked too fast for beginners. Anyway, the show takes one dark turn near the end, which is shocking because it is so sunny and hilarious and sensitive otherwise.
